By Jonathan Thomas
I believe God places desires in us for a reason. Often we try to fulfill those desires for own purposes that are selfish and unprofitable. And when all is said and done, it’s not as fulfilling as we thought.
Before starting college, I played shows in a band for a few
years and was convinced I would someday "make it" as a recording
artist and be famous. However, the doors to that life kept closing, and God
opened different doors that I didn't expect. When I first started as the Youth
Worship Leader and MVBC, I saw it as a job. But quickly God changed my heart
and I fell in love with ministry. Suddenly I could see my desires in the true
light and saw that with God, my desires had a much higher purpose. God had a
better plan than mine (go figure).
God has placed in me desires that
reach their ultimate fulfillment in Him. I desired to record music, and I
surrendered that to God (kicking and screaming). The "New Song"
project has been better than a dream come true and some of the most fun and
fulfilling times of my life as a musician. I had the opportunity to record
alongside such extremely talented musicians, and engineers who took my music
and my mediocre descriptions of how I want to play it, and were gladly willing
to put forth so much effort and beauty into the recording. For that I am extremely
humbled. I had the opportunity to work with a choir; a strong, uproar of voices
gladly willing to sing when I said "sing" and stop when I said
"stop." Again, a very fun, and humbling experience. Finally, I was
given the opportunity to serve God and pursue my dreams; and for that, I am
eternally grateful.
I've learned that the more I love
God, and the more I seek his will and surrender my desires, the more my desires
and God's match up. Surrendering my desires to God didn't mean that they were
eliminated. Instead, they were elevated
to a greater purpose. I know Tim and I are so thankful for a place like MVBC
that allows us to serve God, and pursue our dreams; and we pray that God will
use this recording to elevate and inspire our community.
