One Sign Of A High Performance Team

Last Saturday, I led a worship master’s class with my mentor, Jeff Merry. The class was filled with a bunch of great worship leaders and their teams. If you missed it, here are just a couple highlights from the session.

Let me ask you, what are the people on your team really good at?
There are a million different kinds of teams out there. Every kind of organization all around the world has different kinds of teams to get the job done. There are school teams, sports teams, corporate teams, military teams, and many many more. Some teams are high functioning and run like well oiled machines. Others are poor functioning, and can barely tie their shoes without management looking over their shoulder, telling them how to do it. So what separates them?

A little over a year ago, I heard Marcus Buckingham, author of StandOut, speak on just that topic. His group surveyed a bunch of high and low functioning teams to determine what separated them. He said, “One thing that made the high functioning teams great, was everyone on the team got to do what they were very best at every day.” It sounds almost too simple, but that was one of the primary things great teams had in common.
When each person on your team gets to do what he or she is very best at every day, it creates a high sense of ownership.
It connects their tasks with their hearts and dreams. Then they’ll go to great lengths to accomplish goals. They’ll put in extra time, pay closer attention to detail, naturally have better attitudes, and a whole host of other great things. A team full of people like these will surprise their leader with how much they accomplish.
So back to the question, what are the people on your team really good at? Consider each person on your team. Where do they really seem to excel? What do they get the most excited about doing? Then ask yourself this challenging question - are they doing what they’re best at?

Question: Whether you’re the leader or the newest member of your team, what are you very best at?
