An Excellent Counseling & Advice Resource [Get A Free Paperback Edition]

Let me ask you, what’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done? Like pretty much every other person on the plant, I bet you could tell some pretty funny stories about doing some pretty dumb things. Nobody is exempt from making mistakes. We’ve all done stupid things. That’s what I love about Kevin Shorkey’s new book, ‘Sin Makes You Stupid’. It’s packed with highly engaging stories that show how sin makes smart people do stupid things. It has stories like this one -

In April 2012 a group of United States Secret service agents were in Cartegena, Columbia preparing for a visit by President Obama. An agent met a female ‘escort’ at a bar and took her back to his hotel room. At the bar she claims that she told him the evening with her would cost $800. She said that he agreed.
The next morning the deal broke down and the Secret Service agent offered her $30. She pressed him to pay what he had agreed to pay. He told her to leave his room.
Another ‘escort’ who was across the hall with a Secret Service agent heard her crying. Both women tried to get the man to pay up.
On her way out of the hotel she came across a police officer in the hallway. He became involved and a hotel security person showed up as well. The escort finally settled for $225 and left.
News of the dispute hit the media.Twelve Secret Service agents were relieved of their duties. They have returned home disgraced. Some are married men.
I wouldn’t want to be in their homes explaining the situation to their wives.
I’m sure this isn’t the first time you’ve heard a story of this kind of stupidity. It’s strange how smart people get trapped into doing really dumb stuff. You hear about it most from famous politicians, musicians, and other public figures because they’re in the limelight, and people are watching for their mistakes. The truth is, it happens just as much to our family, friends and neighbors. A lot of them are people we respect and look up to. But there’s something about the allure of sin that makes smart people do stupid things.

In this book, Kevin highlights life’s stumbling blocks, and and gives practical advice on how to stay smart by avoiding the sinful habits that always trip us up.

The Best Things About This Book.

- It’s packed with great content. Kevin highlights the crucial areas of our lives that we need to be aware of in order to avoid doing stupid things.

- It has tons of colorful and well told stories that illustrate the point’s of the book.

- It’s an excellent counseling resource. Kevin’s practical advice is all backed with relatable presentations of biblical illustrations. That makes it easy to connect Scripture with the issues you and the people who look to you are facing.

- Each chapter is punctuated with small group resources. Most authors want to make the small group guide a whole other book that they can charge you for. Kevin also includes a number of small group session videos for free on the book’s website. For that reason, ‘Sin Makes You Stupid’ is a smart buy.

I recently wrote an article called Worship Twerking, about my own battle with pride and selfishness. So this book was timely for me. I got a ton out of it, and I think you will too.

Question: Describe one stupid/embarrassing thing you've done, that you're willing to share with other people (doesn't have to be sinful)?

  1. I hadn't been a youth leader for very long when I began getting more responsibilities delegated to me. Instead of looking at each opportunity as a chance to learn something new, I saw it as an affirmation of how awesome I was. Without realizing it, I let pride creep in, which really has no place in ministry. Suddenly, I couldn't figure out why none of the kids wanted to be around me. They didn't want to be around me because my head couldn't fit through the door. God had to bring circumstances into my life to teach me that it's about Jesus, not Marcus.

    1. Awesome Marcus! Pride is crafty like that. It sounds like you gained the right insight. Thanks for sharing!

  2. While not my stupidest moment but certainly public. I told Paul baloche to stop tweeting thinking I was just stopping my mobile updates from him. To which he simply replied hello. oh man. To error is human. To error and admit it is humility.
